Licence Renewals

All St. Albert business licences expire on December 31 and must be renewed for the following year if the business will continue operations. 

2025 Renewals are underway! Renewal invoices will be sent out the first week of December.

Renew a Business Licence using the:

Online Payment Portal

Once payment is received, you will be emailed a PDF copy of your Licence Certificate within two (2) business days (copies of all licence certificates can be accessed at any time in your MyCity account).

Business Licensing Renewals Notice

Due to the ongoing Canada Post strike, Business Licensing Renewal invoices or certificates cannot be mailed out.

  • eBilling Accounts: If your account is on eBilling, you will receive your invoice via email in the first week of December.
  • Non-eBilling Accounts: Contact licensing@stalbert.ca or call 780-459-1618 after December 2, 2024, to renew your licence.
  • In-Person Pickup: Invoices can be collected at 29 Sir Winston Churchill Ave or emailed upon request (for non-MyCity users) after December 2, 2024.

Closed or Expired Business Licence Account

To have your business licence reinstated if it was previously cancelled, please contact licensing@stalbert.ca or at 780-459-1618.

Do not apply for a new licence.


An active business licence is a requirement to operate in the City of St. Albert as per Business Licence Bylaw 43/2000. Contravening the Bylaw is an offence that may be liable for a fine up to $1,500 or requiring an appearance in court without the option of making a voluntary payment. When renewing a licence, please ensure you communicate updated business information to Business Licensing, for example: number of years the business has been in operation, number of full-time/ part-time employees, etc.

Licence Payments

Business licences can be paid for by doing one of the following: 

  • Credit Card:
    • Through our online payment portal;
      • You will need your account or licence number (found on the top right corner of your invoice or business licence);
      • You will need a valid Visa or MasterCard credit card.
    • In-person at the St. Albert Business Centre: 
      • 29 Sir Winston Churchill Ave, St. Albert AB T8N 0G3 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.
      • Debit is also accepted in person.
    • By phone, please call 780-459-1618.
  • Financial Institution
    • In the online bill setup, add “City of St. Albert Business Licence” as the “payee”;
    • Input the amount of your licensing fee and add your business license number or account number as the reference; or
    • Take your renewal invoice to your bank, and the bank can process the payment.
  • Cheque:
    • In-person at the St. Albert Business Centre: 
      • 29 Sir Winston Churchill Ave, St. Albert AB T8N 0G3 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.
    • Please note:
      • All cheques must include the related account number or business licence number as a reference;
      • Cheques must be made out to "City of St. Albert."
  • Cash
    • In-person at St. Albert Place (City Hall), at the Customer Service Centre (Main Floor) ONLY
      • 5 St. Anne St, St. Albert AB T8N 3Z9 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.
  • Payment Methods Not Accepted:
    • EFT (electronic funds transfer);
    • e-transfer;
    • Visa Debit

Please note, hard copies of your licence will be unable to be mailed out due to the Canada Post strike. 

Licence Fees

Licensing fees are for the calendar year; however, fees are pro-rated depending on when a business licence is issued.

Currently, the City of St. Albert does not offer temporary licences.

A late penalty of $25.00 is charged on in-town and cannabis licences if not renewed by Jan 31, and was operating prior to Jan 1.

Business Licences are a regulatory fee (not supplies/goods or services provided) so they are GST exempt. 

Licences not renewed by Feb 28 are considered expired and will move to an enforcement status, where a fine may be issued.
