Great West Media a Cornerstone of St. Albert for 60 Years

St. Albert is home to diverse and innovative businesses that are champions in their industries with everything from industrial to retail offerings.

The City is continuing its eight-part video series showcasing a variety of local businesses by launching the last four videos every Monday over the next four weeks.

Check out the video below to see how Great West Media has taken advantage of setting up shop ‘right here in St. Albert,’ and how it is not only a part of our community but also serves over 19 other communities throughout Alberta.

Great West Media, and by extension The St. Albert Gazette, has been a cornerstone in the St. Albert community for 60 years. It was founded in 1961 and has remained in the family of Evan Jamison, Vice-President of Manufacturing since the late sixties.

“My grandparents had the opportunity of purchasing the paper in 1966, and that’s when they moved the family to St. Albert and we’ve been here ever since,” says Evan.

Great West Media hasn’t always been where it is located today in Campbell Business Park. It actually started in a small shop on Perron Street to then expand into its current 55,000 square foot location which it calls home and head office. With one of the most automated web offset presses in North America, Great West Media not only prints the St. Albert Gazette from here, but a multitude of other papers from the Lac La Biche Post to the Rocky View Weekly.

“We go through somewhere in the neighbourhood of about 18 metric tonnes of paper a day,” adds Evan.

Great West Media serves 19 communities in Alberta, providing a variety of paper media products.

Digital Manager Willy Grant reflects on advancements in technologies and utilizing new digital platforms, and how it has allowed Great West to achieve the largest readership they have ever had.

“Digital allows us to do photo galleries, do video and post more content than if it were only available in newspaper,” says Willy.

There are over 1.2 million digital readers per month, in addition to 170,000 readers of print media.

Great West Media also gives back within its community through involvement in local charities and through their commitment to supporting local businesses.

“I love the community, it’s a very close knit community. It’s a great place to work and it’s great place to live it’s also a great place to have your business,” adds Willy.
