St. Albert Fire Hall #1, currently located at 18 Sir Winston Churchill Avenue, was originally constructed in 1962 and was renovated in 1977, 1987 and 2011.
Fire Hall #1 is experiencing a significant impact to operations due to the insufficiency of space. It is also lacking many of the requirements of a modern-hardened building. These requirements include having an adequate bay size to allow for access and egress of fire apparatus, a separately ventilated gear room to allow off-gassing of soiled bunker gear, as well as appropriate barriers between the apparatus bay and staff occupancy area.
Additionally, many of the current building components, such as electrical, mechanical, HVAC and plumbing, are well beyond the end of their serviceable lifecycle. Finally, as downtown St. Albert modernizes and densifies, a ladder truck will soon be required in the immediate area – something that is not possible in the current location.
about the project
Firehall#1 will replace the existing fire hall located on Sir Winston Churchill Avenue. IT will provide improved coverage to the south and east portions of St. Albert. It will house Firefighters/Medics, Fire Services Officers, Emergency Management personnel, and Training and Fire Prevention Officers. A new emergency operations center will be built on the second floor of the building.
The Work Includes
The building will be two stories and include 16 dorms, four bays and allow for an aerial truck to service the downtown core.
The project began construction in the fall of 2020 and is expected to be completed in December 2021.
