Intersection Improvement & Off-Ramp Redesign
Anthony Henday Drive Westbound to 184 Street/Ray Gibbon Drive Northbound
About this Project
As a result of discussions with the City of Edmonton and Alberta Transportation, the long-term objective of closing the intersection of 137 Avenue and 184 Street is not viable in the short-to-moderate time frame. As such, the City of Edmonton has performed work to investigate what changes may support improved operations and safety through the area.
The following improvements were recommended:
- Re-designing the westbound to northbound right turn movement by closing the existing right turn merge from Anthony Henday Drive onto Ray Gibbon Drive and constructing a dedicated right turn lane at the signalized intersection of 184 St /Ray Gibbon Drive @ Anthony Henday Drive westbound ramp;
- Developing a northbound acceleration lane to Ray Gibbon Drive north of Anthony Henday Drive;
- Extending the northbound to westbound left turn bay at the Ray Gibbon Drive/137 Avenue intersection; and
- Modifying the northbound to eastbound right turn geometry at Ray Gibbon Drive/137 Avenue to allow only simple right turn movements to mitigate the informal use of the east leg of 137 Avenue as a U-turn.

Anthony Henday Off-Ramp Drawing
In combination with the operational benefits provided by the widening of Ray Gibbon Drive, these modifications are anticipated to reduce congestion and delay, while also improving safety in this area. These improvements are scheduled for construction in 2021 and will serve as an interim solution until the future connection of LeClair Way can be accomplished.
This project is a joint venture between Albert Transportation, City of Edmonton and City of St. Albert. A funding agreement has been prepared between the City of Edmonton and City of St. Albert to share the costs associated with the improvements noted above.
Park Paving Ltd. was the successful contractor selected to deliver this project and construction is expected to take approximately eight weeks starting May 24, 2021 (weather permitting).
Drivers will continue to use the off-ramp until the turn bay and intersection are completed at 184 Street/Ray Gibbon Drive and once operational, the off-ramp will be isolated and decommissioned with concrete barriers.
Drivers are instructed to pay attention to signage and road markings, as well as reduce speeds and give workers safe working room.Related Pages
