Road Preservation

Extending Road Lifespans

Preservation treatments are designed to maintain the current road’s quality and extend the time until the next treatment. These methods can include Crack Sealing and Microsurfacing.

Crack Sealing

  • Preservation treatment that prevents water from penetrating the asphalt and prevents further cracking and deterioration of the street.
  • It is used on roads two to three years after initial construction or after a restoration treatment to seal the cracks.
  • The treatment lasts approximately five to 10 years.
  • It is a cost-effective method that can be done relatively quickly with minimal disruption to traffic and residents.

Microsurfacing

  • The preservation method that places a special coating on the top layer of the asphalt to help extend the road’s life. This treatment slows the natural degradation of the road and is usually placed a few years after crack sealing.
  • It is used on roads approximately six to eight years after initial construction or after a restoration treatment.
  • The treatment lasts from five to eight years.
  • A cost-effective method that can be applied in one day with minimal disruption to residents.

This treatment does not use compaction, so some initial roughness and loose aggregate directly following the completion of work is normal.

Thin/Ultra Thin Overlays

The City is investigating the use of Thin or Ultra Thin Overlays for its roadway network. This method adds a thin layer of asphalt on top of the existing roadway without grinding.
