Birch Drive Storm System Upgrade
About the Project
The Localized Storm Drainage Improvements Program looks at correcting deficient local grading and storm water conveyance structures (i.e. swale) around impacted residential properties to eliminate local water ponding as per the Drainage Bylaw.
The Breaside neighbourhood was constructed without a stormwater drainage minor system (underground) and uses the major system (overland) for stormwater runoff drainage. However, there is a low point in the alley located between Birch Drive, Belmont Drive, Burn Street, and Brandon Street (Birch Drive Lane), which does not drain very well overland.
The Utilities Services Branch hired Associated Engineering to complete a review of the overland stormwater drainage system in the Birch Drive Lane area, which was designed to understand stormwater behavior and review potential options. Additionally, the 2020 Utilities Master Plan (UMP) identified the need for a new minor storm system in the Braeside neighbourhood. The UMP proposed a storm sewer along Brandon Street connecting with the storm manhole on the corner of Brandon Street and Sturgeon Road and running south to Belmont Drive.
The City has hired CKB Construction to undertake the storm system Upgrade along Brandon St and Birch Drive Lane.
The work will consist of the following:
- Set up utility locate flagging and staking.
- Set up traffic control.
- Surface removals.
- Construct a 450mm dia. storm sewer and manholes from the existing 600mm diameter. Stub on Sturgeon Road along Brandon Street to Birch Lane.
- Construct a 450mm dia. CB lead from the new storm sewer on Brandon Street to the low point.
- Construct a catch basin manhole at the low point.
- Remove and restore asphalt surface, concrete sidewalks, and landscaping as required.
- Surface restoration.
Potential Construction Impacts
The construction area will be designated by construction fencing and will be defined with construction signage and barricades. Please obey the traffic control signage.
