Light Rail Transit
In 2014/2015, the City of St. Albert completed concept planning for a future Light Rail Transit (LRT) line in the city. The study was completed in two stages:
- Stage 1 - Completed in 2014 - Considered six LRT alignment options through St. Albert and identified St. Albert Trail as the preferred LRT corridor.
- Stage 2 - Completed in 2015 - Building on the preferred LRT corridor identified in Stage 1, concept plans of the preferred alignment with stop locations was prepared including probable costs to construct.
Key Highlights
- The preferred alignment was identified based on the evaluation of a series of comparative criteria as well as feedback from residents and stakeholders.
- Overall, the alignment is intended to begin at the Nakî Transit Centre and head north on the east side of St. Albert Trail. With a terminus in north St. Albert on the west side of St. Albert Trail, the alignment is envisioned to transition from the east side to the west side in the vicinity of Erin Ridge Road.
- Given the limited available right-of-way, between Hebert Road and Giroux Road, the implementation of LRT is anticipated to require the removal of one vehicle travel lane in each direction.
- Three LRT stations are envisioned between the north and south terminus. This includes a station north of Hebert Road/Gervais Road, a station north of St. Anne Street/Sturgeon Road, and a station north of Giroux Road/Boudreau Road.
- The proposed LRT will be approximately 7 km in length and cost an estimated $1.1 Billion (2015 dollars). Refer to the St. Albert LRT Planning Study - Phase 2 - Alignment Selection Report for more details.
Since the planning study was completed, the north terminus has changed pushing it further north to a future transit-oriented development in the northwest quadrant of the St. Albert Trail/Neil Ross Road intersection. In addition, the future LRT alignment has been accounted for within the current north St. Albert Trail widening that is occurring between Giroux Road and Neil Ross Road minimizing future disruptions.
Further design is required to confirm the alignment and refine the details. In addition, consideration of Bus Rapid Transit as an interim measure and/or alternative to LRT will be explored in the future. The City has no timeline for construction; however, the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board (EMRB) identifies the implementation by 2045 within their Integrated Regional Transportation Master Plan (IRTMP).
