12.6 Downtown
Principle
Grow and reinforce Downtown as St. Albert’s civic and cultural heart, a thriving business district, and a dynamic neighbourhood.
Downtown St. Albert is an exciting, vibrant place where residents, visitors, businesses, and government gather. It is a place to shop, celebrate history and the arts, and enjoy outstanding events and entertainment. Building on existing assets and continuing to invest in the public realm is critical to growing Downtown as a unique, attractive, urban neighbourhood, where residents get around by walking, cycling, or taking public transit. The following policies focus on the public realm of Downtown. Other policies applicable to Downtown can be found in Sections 6 and 14.
“Public space is for living, doing business, kissing, and playing. Its value can’t be measured with economics or mathematics; it must be felt with the soul.”
– Enrique Peñalosa, urbanist and former mayor of Bogotá
