Initiative #3: Neighbourhood Intensification Strategy
This initiative is about making it easier for small-scale growth to happen within St. Albert’s existing neighbourhoods over time, while remaining compatible with the surrounding area.
That could mean updating regulations to support more affordable and diverse housing options — like secondary suites, duplexes or townhomes — as well as planning ahead for how larger sites (such as surplus school properties) might be redeveloped in the future.
Aspects of this initiative may overlap with Initiative #1 (Transit Corridor Intensification Strategy) and include studies on growth, utility infrastructure, transportation and other technical aspects. These studies will also help the City decide how to best use CMHC funding for City infrastructure improvements, preliminary design studies and other related projects to bring more housing options to St. Albert, sooner.
To meet the community’s housing needs, the City is advancing work that supports a variety of housing options. Before housing-related regulations are drafted, the City is asking for public input about four (4) guiding principles. Residents are invited to share their thoughts through a survey here by March 27.
