What's Happening

Formed in the late 1990s, indie folk-rock act Fruit Bats grew from the four-track recording project of songwriter Eric D. Johnson into a touring band with an ever-shifting lineup. Constant are Johnson's warm vocals and melodic sensibility, both of which often seem to split the difference between Lennon and McCartney.

Baby Man, the new album by Fruit Bats, stands apart in their catalog. Stripped to just voice, guitar, or piano, with only producer Thom Monahan returning since their last collaboration Gold Past Life, it captures raw intimacy and ambition. Written and recorded from scratch, each day brought forth new songs, hauntingly beautiful and immediate. Monahan’s presence grounds Johnson’s minimalist-maximalist approach. Johnson’s voice, pushed forward in the mix, carries the album’s heart - tender, vulnerable and searching. Songs like Puddle Jumper and Let You People Down explore love, loss and rebirth. Baby Man redefines Fruit Bats, marking Johnson as a timeless songwriter.
