What's Happening
For more than a decade, Reuben and the Dark has become one of Canada’s most distinctive voices in modern folk and indie rock, building a catalogue of songs that blur the line between intimate confession and communal anthem. Led by Calgary songwriter Reuben Bullock, the project has earned an international following through its emotionally expansive songwriting, cinematic sound and live performances that transform audiences into choirs.
Raised in the foothills of southern Alberta, Bullock grew up surrounded by wide-open landscapes, long winters and a family whose love, struggles, and resilience would become lifelong sources of inspiration. In 2014, the release of the band’s debut album Funeral Sky introduced a songwriter capable of pairing deeply personal stories with soaring, cathartic arrangements.
Over the years, Bullock has continued to expand the project’s musical vocabulary across acclaimed albums including Arms of a Dream, Unlove and In Lieu of Light. Whether performing with a full band, in collaboration with Indigenous Powwow group the Bullhorn Singers or alone with an acoustic guitar, he approaches songwriting less as performance than a conversation: an invitation for listeners to find pieces of themselves inside someone else’s story.
More than five albums into his career, Reuben Bullock continues to write songs rooted in family, memory, forgiveness and the enduring power of human connection.
