Songs My Mother Never Sung Me is an extraordinary chamber opera for families about the relationship between a deaf mom and her hearing son. With its innovative, inspiring and inclusive approach, this piece is performed and sung in English and ASL (American Sign Language) without surtitles or interpretation. The heart of this touching and funny work is its intimate connection to playwright and composer Dave Clarke’s experience growing up as a child to deaf parents and navigating life through a hearing world. It’s a poetic story that is complex and multi-layered, but at its heart quite simple. It’s a story of a boy and his mom and the diverse ways in which individuals can communicate.
