The Culture Map Project
What is Cultural Mapping?
Cultural mapping is a process to identify and document the cultural resources or assets of a community. It embraces a broad definition of cultural resources as illustrated below. The broad definition of cultural resources illustrated in this diagram is dynamic. It is, however, a starting point for gathering information on the rich and diverse cultural assets in St. Albert.
Cultural Enterprises
Music and dance studios, bookstores, antique dealers, photographers, graphic designers, art dealers, publishers, sound recording, art galleries, etc.
Community Cultural Organizations
Arts Groups, multicultural groups, community bands and choirs, heritage groups, horticultural groups, Aboriginal groups, etc.
Cultural Heritage
Local historic sites, heritage districts, built heritage properties, historic plaques, monuments, and public art.
Cultural Spaces and Facilities
Cultural Centres, food establishments with live music, art galleries and museums, theatres, performing arts facilities, cinemas, etc.
Natural Heritage
Significant local parks, trails, nature centres, conservation areas, etc.
Festivals and Events
Art Festivals, Aboriginal and multicultural events, craft festivals, gallery/art and studio tours, music festivals, street festivals, etc
It is important to note that there will always be new information and new assets to add. What the Cultural Mapping Project will do is to establish a solid foundation and set of tools to continue cultural mapping efforts over time.
