Dr. Lillian Upright - 2018

2018 / Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award

Dr. Lillian Upright began a lifelong love affair of music at age five with her first piano lessons. An accomplished examiner, festival adjudicator, workshop clinician and recitalist for over 50 years, she served as an inspiring role model and respected mentor for generations of young musicians.

At only 16 years of age, Lillian started teaching piano and would go on to become the first doctoral candidate to receive a degree in Piano Performance at the University of Alberta. Edmonton-raised, she called St. Albert home for over 30 years – leaving a lasting mark on the community as Music Director for the St. Albert United Church and co-founder, leader and accompanist for the St. Albert Singers Guild.

Lillian has performed across the country as well as taught at the University of Alberta and privately, in studios. Retired in 2005, the gifted 85-year-old regularly performs at her retirement community in downtown Edmonton – where she can be found most days at the Grand Piano.
