Red Willow Park West Meadowview Project

Project Description

This opportunity called for Artists who could thoughtfully respond to the unique natural and cultural landscape of the new Red Willow Trail extension. Artists with lived Indigenous backgrounds in Treaty 6 territory or demonstrated experience working respectfully with Indigenous partners in Treaty 6 territory were encouraged to apply.

This project will bring thoughtful, interactive public art to shared pathways and natural spaces of this trail extension. The work will engage with the predetermined themes of traditionally and culturally significant plants, the historic Riverlot system and the notable white spruce, aiming to create meaningful experiences that connect trail users with the land, its history and the communities that steward it. By transforming parks and trails into immersive learning environments, this project is intended to invite visitors to reflect, discover and deepen their connection to nature while inspiring a shared commitment to protecting these vital spaces.

Timeline

This project is ongoing and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2027.

Artist Selection

We are pleased to announce the selection of Tiffany Shaw as the artist for the Red Willow Park West Meadowview Public Art Project.

Tiffany is a Métis artist, architect, and curator based in Alberta. Her approach is grounded in listening to the land and the perseverance of Indigenous women's artwork. Forming a cohesive narrative between past, present and future concepts, Shaw brings essential relational and reciprocal aspects into contemporary practice that reflects the hearts and minds of the groups she collaborates with.

Selected through a competitive process, Shaw brings a deeply considered approach to the project's guiding themes, including traditionally and culturally-significant plants, the historic Riverlot system and the notable White Spruce. Her work reflects a strong sensitivity to place, interlacing ecological knowledge, cultural memory and contemporary artistic expression. Through this project, Shaw will develop work that invites reflection on the relationships between people, land and time, creating opportunities for dialogue, learning and shared understanding.
