Public Art at the Children's Festival

The City of St. Albert is well-known for its public art collection and is committed to continuing to build a collection that contributes to our community’s sense of belonging, wellbeing and wonder. Many artworks in our collection are on display in the downtown core of the city and as you enjoy the Children’s Festival, you will notice these works of art all around you.

As an ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of children and youth with community art, the Children’s Festival is proud to present our partnership with artist Nickelas “Smokey” Johnson at the 2026 Festival. Smokey is a multidisciplinary artist from northern Alberta whose visual work merges earthy surrealism with the landscape he comes from. His artwork consists of handmade wooden figures, site-specific installations and sculptural environments that draw from folklore, humor and the uncanny. Through the blending of craft, mythology and quaint ritual, Smokey’s work cultivates a sculptural language that is playful, haunting and intimately tied to the land that shapes it – in short, the perfect creative addition to make imaginations run wild!

Artist, Nikelas "Smokey" Johnson sits with his artwork.
