Duration: 75 minutes

Festival Venue: The Arden Theatre  [5 St. Anne Street]

Using overhead projectors, paper shadow puppets and live actors in silhouette, as well as a live music ensemble and miniature toy theatre, Chicago-based Manual Cinema creates a visually stunning modern retelling of The Magic City, a novel first penned by famed British children’s author Edith Nesbit in 1910.

You see, nine-year-old Philomena loves to build structures out of books, toys and other objects from around her house. But one day, her older sister and legal guardian Helen announces that she is engaged to marry, and as such, the pair must move to her fiancé’s mansion. Left alone and forced to make friends with her stepbrother, Philomena secludes herself in the attic where she builds her biggest miniature city yet. When she awakens to discover her mighty metropolis has come alive, adventure begins!
