Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program

Two women walking through the Celebration GardenThis is a program that began in 2013. Through the Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program, senior homeowners can defer all or part of their residential property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan with the Alberta government. The loans are repaid when the home is sold, or sooner if the senior chooses. This is a voluntary program for which senior homeowners can apply. To be eligible for the Seniors Property Tax Deferral, homeowners must be 65 years or older and have a minimum of 25 per cent equity in their home. The home must be the senior’s primary residence - where he or she lives most of the time.

St. Albert Senior Homeowners Property Tax Assistance Grant Program

  • The purpose of the grant is to reduce the impact of increases in municipal property taxation for eligible senior homeowners.
  • Under the St. Albert Senior Homeowners Property Tax Assistance Grant program, eligible seniors receive a $200 flat grant. Only one grant per household is permitted. You do not need to apply to the City or the province to receive the grant. If you are eligible, your grant will be credited directly to your tax account.
  • Qualification for the program is based on age, income and home ownership. A St. Albert senior will be eligible for a property tax grant if he/she, as of May 1st of 2024:
    • is 65 years of age or older;
    • resides in St. Albert;
    • owns a residential property in St. Albert; and
    • is eligible for the Alberta Seniors Benefit program.
