Leading by Example

Are you leading by example when it comes to taking care of your health and fitness? Trish Van De Ligt, Fitness Instructor at Servus Credit Union Place, reminds us that our habits can have a ripple effect not only on our own lives but also on our children's.

headshot of instructorYou would do anything for your kids. And you want the very best for them. That’s why you make sure they eat right, go to school and do their homework. Ensuring that they don’t spend too much time in front of the screen, get to bed on time, eat nutritious food and drink water. You make sure they are getting outside and moving their bodies. You put them in camps if they want to improve on a sport, hobby or just to have fun. Summer Camps

You make sure they know they are loved. What about you?

When do you make sure you get to bed on time, drink enough water, fuel your brain and body with nutritious food and make sure you’re moving your body?

When you think about your child or when they become adults and parents, do you still want the best for them? Of course you do! Do you want them to take care of themselves? OF COURSE YOU DO.

So, are you leading by example? Why not?

We hear it all the time from parents and have been guilty ourselves of saying “I have to do this that and the other” and it’s always for the family. Can you tell me why 30-60 minutes of that day can’t be used for yourself? To help you focus throughout the day, regulate your emotions, sleep so you can be rested for the tasks ahead, deal with stress and physical ailments, all the while increasing your overall health which in turn helps extend your life.

Working out helps you regulate your emotions, which aids in day-to-day interactions with your family and friends. It can relieve stress and calm the mind, helping you make wiser and calmer decisions; again, impacting your family. It helps you focus, hey look at that to do list, you can actually focus on the things that need to get done. Another bonus, you have strength and mobility because you are working out, which helps your body work for you which you guessed it, helps and aids your family.

When you lead by example your children get to learn great ways to deal with stress, anxiety, depression, while making their bodies stronger and healthier. Working out releases endorphins, also known as the happy hormone. It helps boost mood and energy.
