Fond Memories

We asked pool users to share their memories and experiences at Fountain Park Recreation Centre:

Fountain Park Pool is a place where youth can come together from different schools throughout St. Albert to develop their swimming skills and start taking their water safety and aquatic leadership courses. I benefited from finding a community of fellow aquatic enthusiasts to share the adolescent journey with. Training, learning, competitions, and eventually working at Fountain Park Pool provided a backdrop to form beneficial relationships that were unique from those of family and school. Another bonus was learning to become a productive contributor to the aquatic community and its goals.

-Neil Martindale, former Fountain Park employee (1981 - 1991) and lifelong pool user.

Growing up in St. Albert, the pool was always one of my favourite places, so much so that I started working for the City of St. Albert as a swimming instructor when I was 16 and have stayed with the City ever since. From the original facility with its two pools, four racquetball courts in the basement, to the renovated facility with the big waterslide, competition pool, and hot tub, I’ve spent many hours of my life there. Favourite memories include getting up the nerve to jump off the high diving board, the pre-Christmas shutdown bubble bath in the small pool and lifeguarding ‘Dive-In Jaws Movie’ nights. Now I have two young children who are starting to get the same experiences as I did, which I love!
