About Disc Golf

Basics

You begin play at the designated tee pads by throwing your disc toward the target. The target is a basket with metal chains to stop flying discs. Each player is finished the hole when the disc is caught in the target’s basket. The goal is to complete each hole in the least amount of throws possible. The player with the lowest total of throws to complete all the holes wins.

Rules of Play

  • Each player’s next throw is made from the place where their disc comes to a full stop after their previous throw.
  • A player must have at least one foot behind the resting spot of their previous throw when they release the disc.
  • To gain momentum and throw longer distances, a running start for each throw is allowed unless the player is within 10 m of the target. If using a running start, at least one foot must remain behind the resting spot of the previous throw until the disc is released.
  • Any throw within 10 m of the target requires that the player not move their feet until the disc is at rest.
  • At the beginning of each hole, the throwing order is determined by each player’s score on the previous hole. The lowest score throws first.

Play Etiquette

  • The player whose disc is furthest from the target throws first.
  • Remain quiet and avoid unnecessary movements when others are throwing.
  • Stand behind the player who is throwing until their throw is complete.
  • Allow faster groups to play through if possible.
  • Please share the park and be respectful of the space for everyone’s enjoyment. Please be environmentally responsible and do not damage any vegetation as per the Parks Bylaw 07/2022.

Safety

  • Be aware of your surroundings and environment and never throw into a blind area or when others are within the target area of your throw. Use a spotter.
  • Always give trail and park users the right of way.
  • Never play a disc from an unsafe position or area. If your disc lands in an unsafe area (ex. road, trail, bench, picnic table, branches of a tree), take your next throw from the closest point in which you are safely able to continue the game.
  • Be positive and responsible. Disc golf may be new to some – take the opportunity to teach others if you have the chance.
