Meet Our Staff: Graeme Shewchuk
If you’ve been a long-time member at Servus Credit Union Place, chances are you’ve had a chance to watch Graeme Shewchuk grow up, graduate from high school and then go to university.
“I’m 25 years old and I’ll be coming up on 10 years with Servus Place next July,” he says proudly. “This place has been my family for over a decade now.”
Graeme started with Servus Place as a member of our summer Leaders in Training (LIT) program when he was only 14 years old before progressing to a summer camp leadership position two years later. At the end of that summer, Graeme began helping with our after-school programs before accepting a position as gym court supervisor. Nowadays, he’s behind the main Guest Services desk where he has worked for the last two years.
“I’ve learned and grown so much working here,” he says. “Working with summer camps, I had to come out of my shell and speak in front of large groups of kids. I picked up skills that have been very helpful carrying forward to my current role where it really helps to be a conversation starter.”
Part of those conversations include talking to guests about membership options, advising them on programs and explaining the benefits of the services and facilities at Servus Place. Graeme will often pop up to the fitness centre to chat with staff and hear about new classes, so he’s prepared to offer suggestions to members about our different programs.
“We do get people coming in who don’t know all of what we offer here,” explains Graeme. “While we do have all our information online, some people just feel more comfortable calling or coming in to talk to us in person. Then we can explore the specifics of what they’re looking for and find a good fit for them.”
Graeme has interacted with thousands of members during his time here, but some that stand out to him are two middle-aged gentlemen named Joe and Jake who drop-in to play basketball on the courts.
“These two are outplaying guys that are half their age and having so much fun doing it – it’s so entertaining but also inspiring,” he explains. “If I’m working the desk I always try to peek around the corner to catch a glimpse of them.”
Now holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta, Graeme is currently job searching in that field but confesses he would stay on in some capacity.
“Servus Place has treated me so well, and there’s always so much going on here,” he says. “It’s fantastic that the community has this facility as a resource.”
