Reference Notes

  1. Equivalency for CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions calculated using electricity consumption GHG intensities for Alberta from Canada's 2023 National Inventory Report (Table A13-10)
  2. Equivalencies for passenger vehicles are based on CO2e emissions prevented using Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) guidelines. You can learn more about NRC calculations, or use the NRC calculator, on their website. Vehicle travel calculated as total CO2e emissions prevented (t CO2e) ÷ 3.26t CO2e/vehicle/year x 15,021 km/vehicle/year.
  3. Equivalencies for tree planting is based on United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines. You can learn more about EPA calculations, or use the EPA calculator, on their website.
  4. Equivalency for household electricity usage is based on ATCO's published figure for Alberta (7,200 kWh/home/year).
  5. Equivalency for trips around the world is based on the agreed circumference of the planet at its equator (40,075 km).
  6. EPA and NRCan calculation methods and values change periodically; the dashboard will reflect these changes when possible.
