What's Happening
Speaker: Kevin Aschim, environmental advocate/speaker (BSc in Forestry & MBA from UofA).
Kevin presents an ecological history of the Sturgeon River + Big Lake and explores how we can repair our beautiful river by adopting better land use practices beginning in our own backyard gardens.
Kevin brings more than 47 years of experience in the specialty and industrial chemicals sector, with a professional focus on water and wastewater treatment systems.
Over the course of his career, Kevin has developed and applied treatment chemistries and nutrient management systems, including work supporting the agricultural sector with a focus on nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur cycling. He also has extensive experience treating complex industrial wastewaters across municipal systems, pulp and paper operations, mining activities, and oilsands tailings.
This background has given Kevin a systems-level understanding of how land use, nutrient loading, and industrial inputs interact to influence watershed health.
He is now focused on translating this expertise into practical approaches for restoring and protecting the ecological integrity of Big Lake and the Sturgeon River, with particular attention to water quality, nutrient balance, and long-term ecosystem resilience.
Cost: Entry by donation ($3/person at the door)
